When you have a toothache, the best thing you can do is go to the dentist. However, there may be times when you aren't able to get to a dentist right away. In these instances, you will want to find ways to deal with the pain until you are able to get in to see your dentist. When your tooth hurts, you can try holding an ice pack to your cheek, right against the aching tooth. If this doesn't give you relief, take a small piece of ice and put it directly on the tooth. Bite down gently, just enough to keep the ice on the tooth. If the ice melts fast, you can use a few pieces, one after the other, until you find the area has become a bit numb.
Note: While ice may make a sensitive tooth painful, it really can make a painful tooth feel better.
Use clove oil
Clove oil does a good job of temporarily taking away a toothache. However, you do want to get ready for the initial stinging clove oil causes when you first put it on your tooth. The easiest way to use the oil is to dip a piece of a cotton ball in the oil and put the cotton ball on the tooth and gently bite down on it.
Use warm salt water
Take a bit of table salt and mix it into a glass of warm water. Swish the water in the area of the aching tooth and spit the water out. Repeat this process until the glass of salt water is gone. Not only will this help the tooth feel better, but it also helps to keep the area clean.
Use a heating pad
You can try holding a heating pad to your cheek on the other side of the tooth that hurts. Be aware that some people find this to bring them relief, while others find it to cause more irritation. Try this method yourself and see if it works well for you.
